My topic: "Evangelicals and Immigration Reform: Players, Positions, and Potential Impact"

Christians in Political Science (CPS) conference at APU (May 29-31)

[from the brochure] The theme of this year's conference, "Freedom and Responsibility in the Modern World," identifies the tensions that characterize current political debates, such as the strain between individual liberty and concern for the common good, and it underscores pressures often found within communities of faith: How do we balance rights with responsibilities? How do we achieve liberty while guarding against licentiousness?

My proposal:

Evangelicals and Immigration Reform: Players, Positions, and Potential Impact

My focus will be on the apparent shift in the position of certain evangelical groups (considered to be key members of the Republican Party base) toward a greater acceptance of immigration reform, which until recently has had little Republican Party support. I intend to survey the landscape of the current on-going lobbying efforts of evangelical Christian groups (both Anglo and Hispanic) on potential immigration reform legislation at the national level. I will aim for a nuanced analysis of the following: which evangelical groups and persons are the players; what positions does each group hold in the debate; what cleavages exist between the evangelical groups supporting reform; and what strength do the evangelical supporters of reform hold vis-à-vis Republican Party lobbying groups who are against immigration reform in any guise?

Search strategies:

I generally searched within Google and Sweet Search using the terms "evangelicals and immigration reform.

In our Research and Writing class, we should work through each of the databases using this same term.

But then we should try some other combinations to see what turns up:
Christians and immigration
Christians and immigration reform
Religion and immigration
Religion and immigration reform
Immigration reform legislative analysis

[Notes to myself:]

Do a search of key databases for more academic articles.

Work through the databases on my Research Module wiki page

Zotero

I worked through all my videos and guides this weekend but am still hesitant to commit to it.

I need to do the most recent Firefox update first.

Then I have to decide if I want to use the Firefox with Microsoft Word plugin version of Zotero or the version for Standalone computers. I think the former.

See the Zotero page on my wiki:

Articles we have covered in class

The following 4 articles we have had assigned for homework and have gone over in class.

1. "Among U.S. evangelicals, surprising support for immigration reform"
2. "Love thy immigrant stranger as thyself"
3. "A Christian split on immigration"
4. "No, Evangelicals Are Not United on Immigration Reform"

Here is how I have "mined" these articles (like "mining" a bibliography) to get a fix on the parts of the issue.

These are the items I want to follow up on from each article.

Ideally I should be using some mindmapping software but I am still not sure which application I want to use. So for now I will produce my list in a linear fashion.

I searched using Google and Sweet Search

Koch brothers: what is their stance on immigration. Their big money could make a difference.

Cognitive dissonance and how this may affect how evangelical Republicans think about immigration reform.

Reconcile the figures:
  1. of undocumented in US 11+ million
  2. of new ones entering yearly
  3. of people deported yearly
  4. of ones returning voluntarily

Talked yesterday to several research librarians about LexisNexis issues.

Received the Jeb Bush book [English version] on Immigration Reform.

Other articles I have read which I need to plug into the outline above

I read two books pertinent to my topic:

M. Daniel Carroll R. Christians at the Border: Immigration, the Church, and the Bible. Grand Rapids, MI: Baker Academic, 2008.

Matthew Soerens and Jenny Hwang. Welcoming the Stranger: Justice, Compassion & Truth in the Immigration Debate. Downers Grove, IL: InterVarsity Press, 2009.

The Biblical debate [use material from the books]

What does the Bible tell us to do in helping the alien and stranger

How to square that with the advice in Romans 13 to obey the law

What if that law seems to conflict with the higher law of God

Take a look at how some reconciliation commissions have dealt with this.

I need to read the book my wife suggested: Blind Spots: Why we fail to what is right and what to do about it.
