WELCOME TO SPRING SEMESTER 2016

I'm Dave Lambert. This is POLI 385 POLITICS OF DEVELOPING NATIONS

I hope you had a great break.

We are going to have fun together this semester--while learning a whole lot in the process.

SORRY, NO CRASHING

I won't be able to add anyone who is not already registered.

SCHEDULE FOR TODAY

1. PRAYER

2. LAPTOP REQUIRED

You must bring a laptop to class every period.

3. MY "THORN IN THE FLESH"
http://thelearningprofessor.wikispaces.com/Thorn+in+the+Flesh

4. INFORMATION CARD
http://thelearningprofessor.wikispaces.com/Info+Card

5. SYLLABUS (mid-term, final, paper, participation, less excess absences)
http://thelearningprofessor.wikispaces.com/POLI+385+Syllabus

6. HOME WIKI: THE LEARNING PROFESSOR
http://thelearningprofessor.wikispaces.com/

Let's take a quick tour of what is on it.

This wiki is public, but only I can make changes to it. You do not need to "join" it or ask to be a member.

7. OUR MAIN CLASS PAGE ON THIS WIKI
http://thelearningprofessor.wikispaces.com/Today+POLI+385

We will use the material contained on our class page of this wiki during every class period:

8. HOMEWORK FOR THURSDAY, 21 JANUARY

How the street gangs took Central America
http://www.foreignaffairs.com/articles/60803/ana-arana/how-the-street-gangs-took-central-america

9. IN CLASS TODAY

I. What I bring to this course.

My international and political science background.

College/Grad school courses/term papers
Vietnam: to see how a developing nation works With this course I have come full circle

Why I have chosen to specialize in Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, and Nicaragua.

Migration from those countries is a key political issue today in US.

My own research leads me in this direction. I want to role model for you how I approach a new subject.

My continuous effort to improve my Spanish-language fluency has me in church with people from these countries.

II. General thrust of our semester

A. Context:

1. US history versus Mexico and Central America (in brief)

2. International and Regional Organizations (in brief)

3. Mexico and Central American history (in brief)

History affects the present. We will select highlights in each country.

B. Individual countries (generally 2 weeks each)

I want you to get off the plane and feel you are prepared to operate there.

What similar problems/obstacles to development within and across developing nations?

Jesus observed that the poor we will have with us always. Likewise with developing nations.

Most of the problems cannot be easily solved.

[Need to think of development issues in other parts of world beyond our course's focus on Mexico and
Central America.]

Let's turn to the Template page on our wiki:
http://thelearningprofessor.wikispaces.com/POLI+385+Template
