WEBSITE SPOTLIGHT

WEBSITE SPOTLIGHT

My Thanks

My modest contribution has been shaped by several bloggers whose work I admire and from whom I have taken numerous ideas: Larry Ferlazzo, Glenn Wiebe, Ken Halla, and Angela Cunningham. Thanks to each of you for what you have given me.

What is WEBSITE SPOTLIGHT?

Website Spotlight denotes a series of some 150 separate blog posts which spotlight quality websites that I use at Azusa Pacific University with my U.S. History students to enrich the regular material in our learning modules.

Who am I hoping to help with these WEBSITE SPOTLIGHT blog posts?

Over the last several years, I have attempted to integrate technology--in a measured way--into my classes. As soon as I began requiring all of my students to bring their personal laptops to each class period, I quickly discovered that my new approach necessitated my finding websites to encourage more active engagement during class time. Each site could work just as well for you without a 1:1 laptop setup, if you display the website on an in-class projector.

Given the difficulty I as a U.S. History professor had in finding (and settling on) academically respectable websites, I hope that my Website Spotlight posts might be of help to other U.S. History teachers, who--either in blended or online classes--want to find appropriate websites to integrate into class periods or to assign to students for homework.

Where do I go to find other great websites?

The Website Spotlight Post Itself

For each specific post, I have not taken the time to describe the website--it should be pretty obvious from the blog post title and the screen capture of the home page of the website. Rather, I assume (I know: assumption is the mother of all screw ups!) that since you have gotten to a post on, say, the Gold Rush, you are likely to want to determine right away, without a ton of verbiage from me, what you can use from that website for an upcoming class.

I limit myself to those specific aspects (more likely text rather than video--my preference) of the website which I find fit particularly well within our face-to-face class sessions or as the basis for the students' regularly-assigned written reactions--this could work well for "flipped" classes.

In a few other posts, I have gone beyond just laying out the specific items to use with my students on any given day. I will sometimes put additional information into the post, often taken from the Site Map or Table of Contents, to help me read myself back into the website some months later (depending on my semester teaching schedule) or to remind myself quickly of what else is available that I may want to use for a class tomorrow.

Combining Each Website Spotlight Blog Post With My Wiki Modules

I hope you will use each Website Spotlight blog post in conjunction with both the modules on my Learning Professor wiki and the numerous other blog posts in my Website Spotlight series.

The specific website spotlighted in each post fits into the material of one of the following U.S. History survey course modules on the wiki:
